Hi, jk.

What make and model computer? Each OEM customizes WinXP to fit its own
hardware. THEIR version might include special drivers that are not in the
Retail version. Or they may have made other tweaks under the hood.

What you tried SHOULD have worked. If it didn't, the only place to get an
official answer is from the OEM. If you mention what model you have, one of
the thousands of people who read this group every day just might recognize
it and advise you how to proceed.

The upgrade version of WinXP (either Home or Pro) will look for a qualifying
version of Windows already installed; if it doesn't find that, it will ask
you to insert a qualifying CD to prove that you are entitled to the lower
upgrade price. A "full" retail CD won't ask for a prior version.

May be true. You can upgrade from an existing OEM version, but IF you MUST
uninstall that, you will need a qualifying CD to install the retail version.
An OEM "recovery disk" probably won't qualify. You won't actually
"uninstall" the original WinXP; you'll just reformat the HD volume, which
will wipe it out. If your OEM installed special drivers here, they will be
erased, too. With either the upgrade or the full version of WinXP you can
do either an upgrade or a clean install; the only difference is the price -
and the test for a qualifying version for the upgrade price.
