IE won't close

HI

recently my internet browser (microsoft), refuses to close in the usual
manner.
X button only beeps at me and the close option refuses to help out.
I have to "end task" which is a real pain.
I have d'loaded another browser but sp2 does not seem to work it's usual
charm.
I have run several spyware/adware removal programs as well as a couple of
anti virus scans, but nothing seems to fix this dillema...

Anyone had this prob?
Can anyone tell me how to fix this?
