It is probably an issue of your laptop (CPU most likely) overheating.

I have had this happen, due to a defective fan. It could also be a defective
temperature sensor, that just makes the system believe it's overheating.

Try running the diagnostics on the sensors and the fans (can't give much
more detail, because it is manufacturer dependent).
