I have never heard of any such requirement regarding removal of an
accessory card of any sort (sound, network, whatever) when doing a
motherboard BIOS flash update.
Note: Flashing the motherboard BIOS is a bit risky and should always
be approached with caution. Only do so if there is some specific
issue that you feel will be resolved by doing the BIOS update. In
other words "if it ain't broke don't fix it". A botched motherboard
BIOS update (and there are many ways in which they can go wrong) can
leave you with an unusable computer that will require a factory
serviced center (or a new motherboard) in order to fix.
