Randomly Occurring Error

I am using a Toshiba satellite 1800 with xp sp1. I am currently
experiencing a random "hic-up" where the machine will freeze for 15-30
seconds. During this time the icons and task bar will disappear and then
reappear.

Any ideas as to what is going on and how to fix it?
