Yeah, but what about his apps? The OS may not care,
but I have seen some REALLY bad application
programming that may well actually think that
WINDOWS <> Windows (on a byte/bit level, that is actually
true).

There are apps that do NOT write to the registry at all, so
going there to resolve the installed path will not work...
