Just be very careful if you have turned on any security or encryption.
Reinstalling XP will destroy the encryption keys, and if you don't have
a backup, while the files will still be there, you won't be able to
access them, and this is a VERY difficult, nearly impossible situation
to "work around".

There is a function in XP to backup the encryption keys to a floppy disk
or other device.
