For the sound issue, if you don't have it get a copy of tweakui:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/downloads/powertoys.asp
On the general tab make sure the beep on errors box is checked. If not
that will turn off the windows start and stop sounds. You can go into
control panel | sounds and audio devices on the sounds tab and turn off
whatever sounds you want.
