Very funny. I've just spent four hours on the phone, from Toronto to
Bangalore to California and now, somewhere in Canada. Finally found one HP
person who would carry the ball for both HP and Microsoft - because obviously
it's their shared responsibility to properly administer this patch - and she
is trying to decipher my error message. When she comes back on the phone,
I'll raise your point. All the webpage says is that XP Home Edition qualifies
for the patch.

Well, how's this for a response: HP just said that, without the patch, I
can't restore to a pre-SP2 point. Going forward after SP2, I can pick a
System Restore point, but not one before then. Therefore, it is absolutely
imperative to back-up all files prior to downloading and installing SP2.

As for de-installing SP2, Microsoft's guy agreed that that is an act of
insanity (my words) given the registry disruptions and other problems likely
to arise.

So, basically, you can wait a few weeks for all these SP2 problems to sort
themselves out - that's my approach - or download and install now, but not
before backing up absolutely everything.

Ah, the world of the profiteers!
