If you set up in Firefox, Tools - Options, General page and click 'Check
now' it should set up the normal registered associations. But a third
party program like Thunderbird probably has its own settings in its
Options for which to use.

Also you may have to make a change in Netscape's own prefs.js file to
stop it grabbing the associations back whenever you load it
