You must clean up the computer before trying to install SP2 on it. Here
are normal malware removal instructions. And yes, you can download
everything you need on a clean computer, unconnected to the infected
machine, and burn to a cd-r.

1) Take the infected machine off the Internet and any lan immediately.
2) From a different, clean machine download Stinger
(http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/) and run it in Safe Mode. Stinger is a
limited virus checker, but its advantage is that it is standalone and
doesn't need to be installed. See further information below about
getting and running TrendMicro's Sysclean. You should probably do this
also.
3) After you've run Stinger and/or Sysclean and removed spyware as
detailed below, install a full-featured antivirus. Update its
definitions and do a full scan.
4) Continue the cleaning process by removing any spyware with Spybot
Search & Destroy (http://www.safer-networking.org) and Ad-aware
(http://www.lavasoftusa.com). These programs are free, so run them both
since they complement each other. You may also want to run CWShredder
and HijackThis from http://aumha.org/freeware.htm. Although CWShredder
is no longer being updated, it will still clean older variants of the
CoolWebSearch malware. Be sure to update these programs before running
them. Always read the instructions before running a spyware removal
tool. It is best to run antivirus and spyware removal tools in Safe
Mode.
5) Make sure you are running a firewall.
6) Go to Windows Update and apply all security patches for your
operating system. Do not install drivers from Windows Update.

While Stinger is a good first-line antivirus tool, it only detects a
very limited number of viruses. TrendMicro's Sysclean is a more
extensive tool which, like Stinger, has the advantage of not needing to
be installed. It requires two parts - the scanning engine and the virus
pattern files.

1. Create a new folder on your Desktop or the C: drive named something
useful like "Sysclean".
2. Go here and download the two parts of the program to that folder:

http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp - Sysclean
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp - virus pattern files

3. Restart your computer in Safe Mode. Get into Safe Mode by repeatedly
tapping the F8 key as the computer is starting up to get to the proper
menu.
4. Go to the Sysclean folder you made and double-click on sysclean.com.
Start the scan. After the scan is finished, look at the log. You may
need to make a note of where any viruses were found if they were not
able to be removed so you can manually delete them.
