For complete "Safety" you can install the Service Pack while running
in Safe Mode. This essentially provides a clean environment. If you
plan to do the Service Pack in normal boot there are a number of
websites that have useful guidelines on Pre & Post operations. Just
routine maintenance before is good thing, SpyBot, AdAware perhaps
a Chkdsk on your system partition. A defrag really isn't required as
the SP will update 2600+ system files, so your disk will be fragmented
after and needs a few days to rebuild Prefetch and wait for Layout.Ini
to be updated.
Afterwards, it's a good idea to check for driver & application updates
and patches for all your hardware and programs.
