Use the "Command Prompt" shortcut in your Start menu to open a DOS
shell. Or use Start -> Run to execute "cmd.exe" to get a DOS shell.
Then enter "chkdsk <d:> /r", where <d:> is the drive letter of whatever
partition you want to check. You may be required to reboot if that
partition/volume is currently inuse and locked out, like the partition
where Windows was installed. In that case, chkdsk will run during the
reboot and before you can login to Windows. You can also use the
capacious help already included with Windows XP: Start -> Help and
Support, search on "chkdsk".

I don't use e-mail for ANY posts in newsgroups. See my signature. Only
if the message is of a highly sensitive nature would I bother using
e-mail, like rape victim guidance, whistleblowing, discussing a hack
that would be destructful to other users (and only if I already knew the
recipient of that info), and so on. Nothing in this newsgroup is
sensitive that it needs to be disconnected and hidden from other users
by taking it offline via e-mail. Also, requesting the discussion
disconnect via e-mail is also a spammer trick to get users to divulge
their true e-mail address (rather than bother demunging any e-mail
addresses purported in the headers or signatures of posters). If you
have the time to post here then you have the time to return here for
replies.

Don't worry about feeling dumb. We're all newbies at everything we ever
try at the beginning, and wizards are measured by how many burnt fingers
they have (and sometimes by how many fingers they still have). You may
need a thicker skin on your ego since some responses are, well, abrasive
and everyone has a bad day which reflects in their reply.
