Tried that too!

It's definitely a software issue - it only locks up when I try to do
anything as admin. (or try to change to admin)

An obvious sign that something is up, is that the regular text input cursor
is very thick (about 10 pixels wide rather that just one)

(note that it's like this too when I boot up from the XP CD to install - so
there are no background applications running.)
