Essentially, it's a product that isn't ever finished. Security patches, new
hardware, updated drivers, new or later version applications..........
Each of those items can change things that don't always play well together.
It's a never ending cycle. I suppose you could "Lock" at a certain point
and not do any updates, change hardware or add new drivers. But how
long would the PC still be able to do what you need it for ?

 Unfortunately, the virus and Malware authors & Security Hole seekers
won't stop their activities.

 Imaging Windows XP before significant changes is the most prudent way
to stay out of trouble.
