If this is the first time you are installing Service Pack 2, and this is a
production machine, I'd go with installing SP1. If this is a test machine,
then go with SP2. To answer your question, No, it is not necessary to
install SP1. SP2 is the updated service pack which contains all changes in
SP1 and more new features.
