Boot to safe mode. Copy all your important data to storage other than your
boot drive/partition. Install Xp anew with a complete format. Get your
system back to where it was pre sp2 and leave it that way!

After sp2 my system wouldn't even boot past the BIOS (Intel) splash screen.
I had to do an XP 'repair'. That allowed me to salvage my data but, like
MANY reports here, my system was DEAD slow - 2½ minute boot and then
crawled. I did a 'clean' install and now everything is as good as any XP
machine can be.
The only way I'll ever have sp2 on a computer is if I have to buy a new one
with it already in place.
