Jack;
1. Windows is a Microsoft product.
However the hardware and much of the software usually is not Microsoft
and thus beyond Microsoft's control.
Who's problem? That depends, some current software and hardware is
poorly written taking advantage of some of the weaknesses in windows.
Microsoft has fixed some of those and now poorly written code can not
handle the more secure Windows.
Clearly a 3rd party problem.
They and not Microsoft need to take care of it.
Some choose not to sometimes because the product is to old for them to
expend resources.
Microsoft has a amount of information on this subject alone and you
have seen much of it, do you apply it?

2. "Why, pray tell, do we need to have our systems compatible to the
service pack"
I would have thought the answer is obvious.
If something is not compatible it may not work.

As for your scenario, you left out at least as much important
information as you put in.
What is the source of the problem?
Are there updates available?
Were drivers reinstalled?
Does everyone, some or very few experience the problem?
The fact the problem showed itself upon installation of SP-2 may tell
a little but is not necessarily relevant.
That is why if there are problems YOU need to do the appropriate
research co check compatibility of YOUR system.
After all it is YOUR computer.

"If my OS (XP) is perfectly happy with my hardware/software
configuartion, is functioning justfine and then the SP renders part or
all of the system unusable guesswho/what is going to be left standing
when the music stops . . . - YEP the SP!"
Are you sure? I thought it was your computer!
Now you have a choice, leave it to the SP, or research to determine
the cause and regain the full use of your computer.
It may be the Service Pack or it may be something else.
Since it is YOUR computer, YOU need to make the determination and
follow the course of action YOU CHOOSE.

I am not as much "pro SP" as much as I am pro secure computing and
Jack should know that by now.
As long as you keep that line of thinking instead you may never
understand.
