Since you're not into chat programs, maybe you could just tell your
friend to send you an email! For less invasive chat programs, you might
want to look at Trillian. I did spend some time looking at their site
for you and didn't see any mention of iChat. However, that doesn't mean
Trillian can't connect to iChat; just that I didn't find anything about
it. If Trillian interests you, there seems to be lots of information
and an active user base.
