thanks elysium. it is largely a case of OCD on my part. it just didn't seem
unreasonable to ask for a predictable taskbar notifications. why on earth do
these icons "behave" in such an unruly fashion.

i've restored back to SP1 and that didn't even help. the only way i can get
the two icons i am stuck on having in certain order (power and volume) is to
keep restoring system back to a restore point i had set manually right when
the taskbar was in a certain configuration i like. this restore point is
right after downloading SP2 since even going back to SP1 doesn't solve this
erratic "behavior."

i have a g40 ibm thinkpad that i started using in march this year. i won't
even go into the squirrely stuff happening on my wife's desktop. but thanks
for "commiserating" with me.

don't think i've overwritten any of ibm's factory installed OS. came with xp
professional, but i have my own copy -- wonder if i should re-install. but as
you say, don't want to get invasive. i fear getting even more c**p than i've
bargained for.
