When you delete a partition it wipes all the info and the partition off the
drive. Then before you can use the drive you have to add a new partition,
then format it.
If I were you, I'd boot to a win9x floppy boot disk, run fdisk, delete all
the partitons, create one partition(or two if you want a partition for
data), then reboot to the floppy boot disk and then run format. You'll now
have one partition using the full drive capacity. Then boot to the xp cd and
install xp.
