I think
AU - Automatic
BITS - Manual
is the default setting for SP2 (ie the BITS service starting up as and when
required rather than on every boot). But I tend to update manually, so mine
may have changed.
As regards .NET, I don't use it, but I think the original Framework was a
"Recommended update" rather than a critical one, so perhaps it's updates are
regarded in the same light, so not downloaded automatically. Someone who
uses it may know better, though.
