The .NET framework is only needed if you want to run programs written
using .NET
You probably already have some version of the .NET framework installed.
Since many software programs being released for Windows XP are being
written using .NET, it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to upgrade this
at some point. But if all your current apps are working, I wouldn't
worry about it too much.
Then again, there may be security holes in the old version that have
been fixed, so that would be another good reason to upgrade.
