Hi Mark,
I created a share folder and placed 4128 JPEG files into this folder. I
believe that I can reproduce your problem.
Windows 98 opens this share folder in 4-6 seconds
Windows XP without any service pack opens this share folder in around 25
seconds
However, I believe that this problem is fixed in Windows XP with Service
Pack 2.
Windows XP with Service Pack 2 opens this share folder in 5-7 seconds
Mark, I recommend you update your computer to Windows XP with Service Pack
2. You can find the instruction to install Service Pack 2 from the below

Have a nice day!
Thanks & Regards,
