I ran system restore but there were no restore points available
for some reason, and booting to the last known good configuration
still caused it to crash.

I managed to solve it shortly after posting the original message
and this is pretty similar to what I did. There were no references
to Alcohol that I could see, but I disabled all the start-up apps
connected with Nero and InCD and this seemed to work. I was then
able to start Windows normally and uninstall Alcohol.
So I guess it must just have been some kind of conflict involving
Alcohol and Nero/ InCD.
