XP Pro has NTbackup installed by default in the system tools folder,
Start | All Programs | Accessories | System tools. It is a relic from
the NT days designed primarily for tape backup. For XP Home it is on
the Windows Installation CD for retail CD's and some OEMs in the Value
Added folder. Otherwise it can be downloaded from the net for free. It
won't write directly to CD's unless 3rd party burning software is
installed and even then won't span CDs. You can use it for smaller
differential backups though. You can use it to backup to another hard
drive, internal or external, but is limited to a maximum 4 GB size.

Better options are first, a boot imaging program. This will create a
compressed image of the complete drive which can be written to another
volume, CD/DVD or a network share. There programs are wonderful because
if your system crashes you can restore the complete disk image. No need
to reinstall programs, etc. They are fast and reliable, booting up from
either a floppy or CD if the system crashes. You can restore either the
complete drive or selected folders. The image must be made of the
complete drive but restoring can be by folders of files. Make sure
whatever one you go with will support the CD/DVD burner you have. The
most common ones are:

Drive Image 7 from Symantec
Norton Ghost from Symantec
Acronis True Image
BootIt NG

For regular backup software the one most commonly mentioned is by Stomp,
Inc. called Backup My PC. It is the continuation of the Veritas Backup
Exec program. A bit pricey but very versatile. I know there are others
but I haven't had experience with them.

I use Drive Image 7 and an external 250 MB USB 2.0 / Firewire drive for
my backups. Occasionally I will burn a copy to DVD using Roxio Easy
CD/DVD Creator 6 (latest version is Easy Media Creator 7) and store
those away from home.
