Larry,
You need to do this, in this order:
1. DON'T plug in the device.
2. Run the setup CD provided with the printer (or download the driver setup
program from the HP website).
3. When, and only when, the program tells you plug the thing in, plug it in
and turn it on.
4. Everything should install correctly.
