SP2 hangs, crashes, locks up randomly

What once was a rock solid OS that never got turned off
is now too fragile to use. It occasionally locks up with
no error messages, and the only recovery is a reboot,
which means any work in progress is lost. I'm frustrated
by the random nature of the problem and ask for help in
doing problem determination.

Most other posts about system hangs seem to be during the
boot process or at least provide an error message of some
sort.

CONFIG: IBM ThinkPad A21m with latest BIOS, Norton
SystemWorks 6.01 with updated virus definitions and
recent scan.
