Give up the idea of using ICS !
If you have DSL then you should get a Cable/DSL Router such as the Linksys BEFSR41. There
are many benefits to using such a device, including, but no limited to...
reducing PC overhead
offloading PPPoE to Router
Simplistic FireWall (Some Router models have full FireWall capabilities)
DHCP server
10/100 Mbps Ethernet switch
Such a device will help protect your PCs from hackers and internet worms. Since SVCHOST
(and variations upon that name) is the target of numerous infectors and malware, you may
already be infected by viruses or parasites.
Please go to one or more of the below online scanners and perform a scan of your platform
then report back your results.

| Hey,
|
| I'm having some troubles with a XP SP2 PC, which acts as an internet
| gateway by sharing its broadband internet connection (using a USB ADSL
| dongle).
|
| The problem is that whenever I enable or disable ICS (un/checking 'allow
| other people to use this internet connection), or try to go to the port
| mapping dialog (either from the PC itself or by clicking 'properties'
| from another XP PC which has found the internet connection and popped it
| into their own network connections list), svchost.exe on the gateway
| computer takes up 99% of the CPU for about 5 minutes, before continuing
| as normal. In this time, the computer is obviously very sluggish and
| it's difficult to do anything at all.
|
| Anyone know what's causing this or how to fix it?
