Were you able to play DVDs before?
WMP can play DVDs only if you install codecs (compressors-decompressors)
that Microsoft doesn't provide. They are included with DVD player software
(examples: WinDVD, PowerDVD). I believe that the Interactual software
(commonly installed from DVDs, if you permit that - I usually don't) doesn't
include codecs either. There may be some legally downloadable free codecs on
the Web, but I haven't used them.
Things are a bit different if you're trying to play one of the HD DVDs:
