We just did this at my kid's school, but we used Linux on the file
server. I wouldn't suggest using Windows 98 on the older machine as a
file server. It just isn't stable under a heavy load and needs to be
rebooted regularly. If you want to stick with Windows, I'd suggest
using Windows 2000 which is a very good operating system. It will give
you far better control over your permissions, too. For instance, on the
folders we made for where the kids hand in their homework files, we set
permissions so the users can write to the folder but can't see anything
else in there. That way a kid can't mess with someone else's work.

I'm not sure why your Win98 box is giving that error, but look at the
attributes on the shared folders. I don't have a Win98 box on right
now, but I seem to recall that when you make a share you have to make
it full access - that isn't the default.

If you need any more help or want the details about what we did, repost
to this thread with an email address where I can contact you. Don't
post an unmunged address, though. Make it something like
Toddatmyschooldotcom so the spambots don't get you.
