There's an on-radar risk that certain apps won't work until they are
updated, or SP2's settings are changed. This is documented at MS.

These issues are to be expected, because (for the first time) MS is
curbing some dangerous "features" they were boosting developers to use
not that long ago. If SP2 does its job, then apps that took MS's
advice at the time will likely be "challenged" by SP2.

OTOH, there's a smaller but more serious risk that AFAIK is yet to be
documented as MS's site - and that is the risk of not being able to
run XP at all, after the SP2 install is done. The only way out:
  - disable L1 and L2 cache
  - run XP, it will be so slow you'll think it's locking up
  - Add/Remove Programs, uninstall SP2
  - enable L1 and L2 cache

Without knowing the above, you may assume your system is
unrecoverable. Can't boot "last good", Safe mode (even "command
only"), Recovery Console off HD or CD. The XP CD won't boot either
unless you disconnect the HD, so forget "repair install" too.

So far, it appears as if only certain systems that use Prescott
generation processors (Celeron or P4) with Intel's 865xx and 875x
motherboard chipsets. That could be a LOT of PCs; while Prescott is
only a montyh or few old, the 865xx and 875 have been pretty standard
for several months now.

Given the consequences are potentially as severe as a bad virus strike
("I had to wipe the HD and start over!"), even a *small* risk is
significant. Until this is fixed or walled out (e.g. a Setup.exe that
says "this PC is not compatible wiht SP2, goodbye") I would not
routinely recommend SP2 unless I knew the PC wasn't at risk.
