Winsock XP fix did it! (and without having to uninstall SP2).
I've been wrestling with this the whole week!

And if you connect directly, w/out the router? Have you tried reinstalling
the router? Seeking SP2-compatible drivers for the router?

Uninstall SP2 again and see what happens. After doing so:

1. Try connecting directly, w/out the router;

2. Try Winsock XP Fix (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/winsockxpfix.html) or
any of the other items found at http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/winsock.htm.
