I have the same problem, interestingly I *do* have F-Secure antivirus
installed although it wasn't running when I did the installation <Keith, I'd
like to hear where you got that info from>
When the computer reboots don't choose the last known configuration, scroll
up and boot into safe mode, you'll then be given the option to do a system
restore, you'll find a system restore was created when you installed sp2 and
you can go back to your previous configuration.

Here's my reply from MS tech support which I haven't tried yet, let me know
on this thread if it works, good luck!
I suggest you try the following steps first then try to install SP2 again.

Please try the following steps to clean the system.

1. Please download Windows XPSp2 to your hard disk.

http://download.microsoft.com/download/1/6/5/165b076b-aaa9-443d-84f0-73cf11fdcdf8/WindowsXP-KB835935-SP2-ENU.exe

2. Perform a Selective Startup.

1. Click Start -> Run -> type MSCONFIG and click OK.

2. Click the Services tab, click Enable All (if it's not grayed out), select
Hide All Microsoft Services, and disable all other non-Microsoft services
except those for your antivirus software.

3. Click the Startup tab, disable all items except Zone Labs Client and
F-StopW.

4. Then click Apply -> OK. Restart your computer. You will get the following
message. This message will appear at the next startup or logon after you
change the settings in MSCONFIG every time. Just click to select Don't show
this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when windows starts.

2. Reload the default IE settings:

1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and double click
Internet Options.

2. On the General tab, click Delete Files within the Temporary Internet
files section.

3. Select the Delete all offline content check box, click OK.

4. Click Delete Cookies, and click OK.

5. Click Clear History within the History section, click Yes.

6. Click the Security tab.

7. Click the Internet icon in the Web content zone box to highlight it.

8. If the "Default Level" (without the quotation marks) button is not gray,
click it to load the Default Level settings.

9. Click the other three icons in the Web content zone box (Local intranet,
Trusted sites and Restricted sites), and load the Default Level settings of
these zones respectively.

10. Click the Content tab, and click AutoComplete.

11. Clear all the check boxes, and click two buttons respectively to clear
AutoComplete history; click OK.

12. Click the Connections tab, and click LAN Settings.

13. Clear all the check boxes, and click OK.

14. Click the Advanced tab, and click Restore Defaults.

15. Clear the check box next to "Enable third-party browser extensions".

16. Click Apply -> OK. Restart the computer.

3. Please scan your hard disk for viruses. You can also use the following
free online virus scan services. Please run two or three of them.

Free Virus Scan

1. Trend http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

2. BitDefender http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php

3. Panda http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

4. Symantec
http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp?langid=ie&venid=sym

5. RAV http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/indexie.php

4. Scan your computer for adware/spyware. You can also use Ad-aware SE to
scan and remove spyware/adware.

http://www.lavasoft.de/

Please update Ad-aware first before you scan your computer.

5. Restart your computer and install SP2 again with the full file we have
downloaded.

If the problem is not resolved, please test if it happens in Safe Mode.

1. Restart the computer.

2. Keep press F8 key (about once a second) until the Windows Startup menu
appears.

3. Choose the Safe Mode, and press Enter.

Note: In Safe Mode, your system display and Desktop will look and perform
differently than in Normal Mode. This is only temporary.

If it still happens in Safe Mode, please test another account both in Safe
Mode and the normal mode. Please let me know the result.

I look forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.

Best regards,
