Hi, Barbara.

Maybe it didn't disappear from the HD. Maybe it was moved to the "staging
area", ready for the CD-writing program to complete the move.

See if you have a folder called "CD Burning". It's probably several levels
deep in the Documents and Settings folder for the particular user. The path
for mine is:
D:\Documents and Settings\R. C. White\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\CD Burning

Yours is probably similar; just change the name and drive letter. You
should find all your "missing" files there.

In my opinion, Microsoft owes us an explanation, an apology and a fix for
this behavior! We are at serious risk of losing data because WinXP tells us
it was written to CD when it actually was not. We could easily backup to
CD, then destroy our original files by deleting the D&S folder - or even
reformatting our HD - without realizing that our "backup" was still NOT on
the CD. The exact behavior varies with the CD burning software we use, but
the bottom line is that we are deceived into thinking our data is safe when
it really is not. (Quicken 2004 (Revision 5), for example, cheerily reports
that our financial files are successfully backed up, but the files are NOT
on the CD unless we manually take the further step of copying them from CD
Burning to the CD.) :>(
