Hi,

Today I tried to install an "USB to PS/2" adapter on my laptop (running
Windows XP Service Pack 2 since yesterday), so that I can connect an
external PS/2 keyboard and PS/2 mouse. The laptop doesn't have PS/2 ports.
On the package of the device it says there is no additional driver needed to
install this device. "no software driver needed"

So I connect the adapter to the USB port and Windows detects the new
hardware. But instead of finishing the installation it asks me whether I
want to allow it to connect to Windowsupdate to search for drivers. Finally
it tells me it can't install the hardware, because it can't find a driver
for it.
I also tried to point the installation wizard to the \windows\inf folder and
others, but it keeps saying it can't find a driver for the device.

Already pretty frustrated about this piece of hardware I tried it (the USB
to PS/2 adapter) in another desktop computer running Windows XP SP1 that I
have here. It took just a couple of seconds until the device was installed
and the PS/2 keyboard and PS/2 mouse were working like a charme.

Next thing I tried to connect other USB devices to the laptop to make sure
it's not a USB port problem.
USB mouse -> ok
USB 2.0 hard drive -> ok
4-port USB 2.0 hub -> can't find drivers; this device is also supposed to
work without installing additional drivers and it works fine on the other
Windows XP computer.

My question is, how can I install devices that don't come with drivers,
because Windows is supposed to have drivers for them "out of the box"?

Thanks.

Btw, Is there any chance that Service Pack 2 for Windows XP could cause my
problems?

The USB to PS/2 adapter is called "UC451N" and you can find some links to
this product with Google.
