Problem installing parallel adapter

I have installed an ITE parallel adapter as LPT-3 using Add New Hardware in
XP Pro. Device Manager reports that it's working properly as LPT-3. When
trying to print, I get a message "local device is disconnected or powered
off", and the print request stays in the print queue until it times out as
printer failed to print. The printer works fine if I assign it and connect
it to LPT-1. I would appreciate any help. Thanks.
