I am going to perform a clean install of XP Pro. No alternatives, thanks.
I have backed up "files and settings".
Doing this I noted that the system backs up all files and settings on all
partitions of the two HD in the PC (Root C+E+F), second HD (D+G).

I understand from the different postings that I will have to reinstall all
the programs.
This is a pain and I wonder if the following will do the trick.
A pain because many of these applications were downloaded. I saved them but
did not relabel most of them.
And since producers have not agreed a coding for their appli, most carry
cryptic short names that do not elicit the true appli name.

I have a third HD (USB: H) on which the backup was done, but there is plenty
of space on it.
I copy my second HD onto the third disk (this is just data, no applications)

I clean the second HD
I physically remove the root disk (C+E+F)
I install the cleaned second HD in the bay where the root was.
I install XP from the CD.
It would install on this second clean disk, right?

I then put back the olde root disk in the second bay.
It has all the applications.
Nothing should prevent me from starting applications from a disk which is
not the root? Right?
Shortcuts would have to be all updated, small work.

Where else, registry, whatnot would such a ploy fail?

Thanks,

Pierre
