Before unplugging the device, click the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon
in the notification area (lower right of screen) and select the
device.

If the device isn't doesn't appear in My Computer when you plug it
back in, click View | Refresh.

If that doesn't show the device, go to Device Manager (Start | Run |
devmgmt.msc), click the computer name, then click Action | Scan for
hardware changes.
