Not necessarily, there are a number of tools (SpinRite, Uneraser)
that you can buy and download that can diagnose and analyze a
drive. At this point what you really need to do is verify the structure
of the drive (Partitions, MBR's, etc) is still intact.
In other words are the original partitions still there and if so is the
data on those partitions readable. Active Uneraser can detect data
that isn't visible with the XP Disk management tools.
What I'm trying to say is that it may still be possible to recover the
data from the drive. However, the more you do to try and fix &
recover the drive may actually diminish the chance of getting it back.
