Actually there's a trade-off here. Although it takes extra time
to compress and uncompress data, the system also saves time
because there's less data to read and write.

Which of these factors is more important depends on the relative
speeds of the processor and disk drive, but on most modern
computers, the result is a near wash, with no big difference
either way.
