Repeated beeping patterns, in Windows XP

Hi, I have a problem where my computer (through the speakers, not anything
internal) keeps beeping. The rythym of the beeping is 3 slow beeps, followed
by 3 fast ones. There is a pause of about a second and then it starts again.
Sometimes this goes on for an hour, sometimes it just stops and everything
is fine for a while. There's nothing specific that seems to trigger it off,
this has been going on for months and happens most days.

I've tried to track this down to no avail, can anybody offer assistance? Any
assistance is greatly appreciated.
