The common aim of many viruses is to disable the Task Manager, System
Configuration Utility (msconfig), and regedit utilities for obvious reasons
and probably this occured in your case. Usually you can restore them from
your system files or Windows CD (usually in Windows32 or i386 folders/files)
but I will let someome else give the details. My point is to visit Doug
Knox's site, then click "Win XP Utilities" on the left side of the window,
then scroll down to "Create Emergency Copies of Critical XP System
Utilities" [being "The Task Manager", The System Configuration Utility, and
the Registry Editor], and click the download button. Install it somewhere
under a name and location you will remember (My Documents) and thus you have
spare copies of these utilities to access and get out of the mess such as
you are presently experiencing.
