also excellent advice, chkdsk /p from the recovery console is a very good
place to start if not able to start windows at all, chkdsk will scan/fix
file system errors, but what usually happens in that case is windows will
not generate a blue screen, but instead report that a critical system file
is not found, usually as a result of a corrupt MFT, which chkdsk /p will fix
(most of the time).
however, i think in this case, s/he is able to boot windows, but a bsod
occurs during startup, so i think advanced startup options menu (F8) and
last known good would be a good place to start, and go from there. if
recovery console becomes necessary, then it would be helpful to see (on the
bsod) what is generating the failure, so that it can be disabled through the
RC.
speaking of the recovery console, for those who don't know, it can be
installed locally (on the hard drive) and be made available as an option on
the startup menu. having the RC installed locally makes diagnosing/fixing
problems much easier, ime. interested in how? let me know.
