I'm willing to bet that you don't have a teenage son with problems, do
you Francis? Instead of criticising him on his relationship with his
son, or faulting his actions, why not just leave it alone if you have
no helpful advice to offer him.
In any event, he IS the parent, he IS paying for the equipment and
services, and has a right and I believe, a responsibility, to know if
his son is up to no good on the computer. The son is obviously being
evasive, which would logically make one assume there *could* be
trouble, or at least a reason why he's hiding his actions.
I would sit your son down and tell him that you HAVE tried checking
the history (as he told you to do), and that you know he's erased his
tracks. And that you want him to stop erasing the history, or you'll
just have to assume that he's hiding something for a reason, in which
case you'll have to discontinue your internet service. Explain to him
that you have gotten a call(s) from the ISP warning you about the
situation. (Is it that the ISP is concerned with the level of
'uploading' he is doing? If that's the case, it sounds like he might
be using file-sharing programs a lot.)
Look into some of the software programs out there that are available
for these kind of situations. Could be tho, that he could get around
them anyway.
You have every right to be concerned about his use of the computer.
Speaking as a friend to a mother whose son got busted last year for
hacking, I think you have every right to know what your son is up to.
We're not talking about reading his emails for pete's sake.
