It sounds like your system is mostly choked - not enough free space on the
hard drive.
Assuming you use IE, go to Internet Options, General tab:
click Delete cookies.
click delete files.
change History Days to keep pages in history to 0 (zero).
click clear history.
If you have any Norton on your system, click the recycle bin and erase the
norton protected files. Then erase the rest of the files in the recycle
bin.
Then see if any of this has changed your available space.
While installing Norton may sound like a great idea, if your system is
already chocked, this will totally level it as it is very muh a disk and
cpu pig. Try Avast! antivirus instead.
