As a WindowsME user everyone kept telling me to upgrade to WindowsXP and
asking why on earth I still bothered with ME. I've got an AMD Athlon XP2000+
512M memory, 5 USB devices, DVD and CDRW writers. The software I mainly use
on this machine is Visual Studio 6.0, Outlook 2000 and Ulead Media Studio
Pro Video editor.
My WindowME machine would require a format and reinstall about once every 2
or 3 months, so I finally decided to upgrade to WindowsXP.
On the box it said 1.5G disk space require, so I already had a 2G partition
and all my applications where installed on another drive. After 2 days my 2G
partition was full so had to repartition my PC and now it has a 5G
partition.
The interactive install was a pain because it meant that I had to sit in
front of my PC for half an hour. Watching paint dry would have been more
exciting.
Detected my ATI Rage Pro 128 Ultra graphics card but installed the wrong
drive.
Have managed to disable all the CPU intensive graphical effects which seemed
to even slow down my 2GHz machine.
My PC seems to for ever require reboots after downloading and installing
critical updates. Luckily I've got broadband, don't know what I would have
done if was still connected on my old 56k modem. Visual Studio has crashed,
Media Studio has crashed, Outlook is very slow and has also crashed, all of
them wanting to send information to Microsoft and who knows if they bother
to read them.
I am by no means a computer novice and my profession is a Network
Specialist and I install and configure OS's from Win95 -Win2K and FreeBSD,
Linux, IRIX, Solaris and HPUX as part of my job.
Am very tempted to go back to WindowsME. Would like to know if anyone has
had similar problems and also any success stories.
