Just to chime in late, to the OP,
Why did you install a second copy of XP on the same drive,
to a second drive or partition, maybe, but to the same drive
will just confuse the registry.
You said you used a Gateway OEM XP CD, perhaps you should
contact Gateway.
My suggestion is to boot the CD again, select install,
delete the current partition and start over. Hope you have
backups. You can boot the CD to the recovery console and
copy files that you can't bear to lose.
