There is no version called the "standard" version.
You can buy any of three versions: Full, Upgrade, or OEM.
The Full version will do either a clean installation or an
upgrade over the top of a previous version.
The Upgrade version will also do either a clean installation or
an upgrade over the top of a previous version. However, to do a
clean installation with the Upgrade version requires that a
previous version be installed or that you have a previous
version's installation CD to show it.
The OEM version will do a clean installation only. Be careful
here, since a lot of people confuse the OEM version with the Full
version.
So, if by "standard" version, you man the Full version, and by
"nuke," you mean do a clean installation, the answer is that it's
your choice. However, even if you do an upgrade installation
rather than a clean one, you should always bear in mind that
there are no guarantees that it always works perfectly. However
unlikely, it's always possible that something might go wrong. For
that reason it's prudent to be sure you have a backup of anything
you can't afford to lose before beginning.
