Hi same problem for me...check this out:-
Installed a separate dvd and a separate cdr from my dad's pc ( an 97/98 dell dimension 333mhz running 98se), a few probs with the setup not recognising each drive but nailed it in the end, installed the software but it came up with
'this cd burning software could make your operating system become unstable'
and then after installing dvd drivers:-
''this dvd software could make your operating system become unstable'
I figured ok, just don't use them then as they are probably too old and not compatible with XP...
So turned it off, put the panels back on and turned it back on.....window comes up
'your cd and dvd drivers will cause instability and create operating and start up/ shut down problems so windows has not opened the drivers'
So I uninstalled the software packages, took out the cdr and dvd drives and resigned myself to splashing out on a new XP badged cdr burner/dvd player.
Round two:--
installed brand new XP compliant multi drive, no problem, installed software, no problem, played a dvd, burned a couple of cd-r's, excellent , cooking on gas....
Put the panels back on, turned it off had me tea......
Turned it back on after me tea.....
After the Dell logo comes up and the bios bar runs across the screen, it stops.
Then comes up with a black screen and
'Windows could not start because the following file is corrupt or missing:
\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM
You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the original Setup CD-ROM
Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.
I haven't got any set up discs or installation discs because the pc is second hand and came with XP........
Am I screwed?
What do I need to do to fix it?.........
Is set up disc different to installation disc?
Do I need to buy XP and start all over again?...
How can I load any discs if Windows wont even start?...
Help?

How can I get my system up and running without having to replace the hard drive
